Waiver Periods

2024-2025 Plan Year

University of Illinois Springfield requires all students who are physically participating in classes on campus to purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)unless of proof of comparable coverage is provided. Students may submit a waiver request to opt out of SHIP through the online waiver portal. Students also have the option to activate their SHIP coverage through the online portal.

If you are submitting a waiver request, please have an electronic copy of the front and back of your health insurance ID card ready.  International students will need a scanned copy of their health insurance ID card and a scanned copy of their insurance policy.

Domestic Student Waiver Requirements

  1. Insurance must be active AND
  2. Insurance must be compliant with the Affordable Care ACT (ACA)

International Student Wavier Requirements

  1. Student must be a U.S. government sponsored student or a foreign government sponsored student OR
  2. Student is covered by an employer-provided group health plan
  3. Plan must be compliant with the Affordable Act (ACA)
  4. Plan must have a deductible of $400 or less (except if an employer plan)
  5. Plan is underwritten by an insurance carrier that meets the requirement of 22 CFR 62.14(d)(1) or offered or underwritten by a federally qualified HMO or competitive Medical Plan as determined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  6. Proof of Repatriation expenses in the of no less than $25,000.
  7. Proof of expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the insured to the insured’s home country of no less than $50,000.

Travel Plans and Individual Plan will not be accepted for a waiver.
